Customer Rating: Summary: Not a good movie an any area Comment: Tiger of Wanchai manages to be decent in some areas, but fails in too many.
The story starts out with Simon Yam in a street race. He and his 3 friends are valets. Very quickly into the story they learn that their friend, played by Lau Ching Wan is getting beaten up for his gambling debts. They make Simon Yam out to be this super tough guy and even though he gets his friend out of trouble, he causes trouble for himself with the gang leader for his area. Well Simon is what is known as a rascal and he has his own plans of becoming a triad. So with success of becoming bouncers at a club, Simon and his crew are known as some of the top gangsters in town. The montage was hilarious with this Chinese song that they would stop and say "I'll never die, I'll never cry", I was laughing at the cheese pretty loudly. I also found it interesting that after they become bouncers, they have like 50 guys with bats helping them out. Very confusing.
Overall the movie was just a bad directorial job with good Category III(rated R) violence that couldn't save the film. Simon Yam isn't terrible in this but Lau Ching Wan gives a very flat performance playing sort fo a goofball. Old school kung fu star was pretty good but not even him could bring this up to a 3 stars. I will usually pop the dvd in and watch it again before I reveiw it, but I onyl made it about an hour into this. I hate movies that I can't watch at least a second time.
The Universal Laser and Media compay version of this is pretty good picture quality, widescreened, and definitely uncut.
Customer Rating: Summary: Macho heroes, tragic ending Comment: Loosely-based story on HK gangster Andy Chan (with Simon Yam in the title role) who was gunned down in his car while in Macau supposedly by rival gangs. Story traces his rise and fall with his 3 buddies(all 3 are quite well-known actors now in HK).Also a bit on his love life, as the title suggests; more fantasy than fact. if you like buddies & gangster movies with plenty of brawlin and shooting; this movie is for you. extra- a nice canto love song by HK band Beyond in the movie.
