Customer Rating: Summary: Vs. or Against - Big Difference Comment: This is Shaolin Against Lama. It's not Shaolin Vs. Lama. It's not just a case of two different translations of the same title. They are separate movies. Both were made around 1983/84, and both star Alexander Lo Rei and William Yen. To add to the confusion, for some reason the cover of the Ground Zero/Black Belt Theater edition of SAL shows a picture of Lo Rei's character from SVL. The tell-tale difference between the two movies is that SAL does not star Chang Shan, whose battles with Lo Rei in SVL help make that movie a classic of the kung fu genre. Instead, Shaolin Against Lama is an above average kung fu movie with good fight scenes and a convoluted storyline.
Customer Rating: Summary: DVD has terrible picture and sound quality Comment: This DVD produced by a company called Ground-Zero (with "Black Belt Theatre" marking on the front cover) seems to have been made from a worn-out VHS tape. The picture was terribly grainy and the sound volume varies frequently. The voice dubbing was hilariously bad. The plot involves a villian named Chia-Siu (roast pork?) who tries to kill a Tibetan prince and ignite a war between the prince's faction and the Shaolin temple. The movie largely consists of fight after fight, tied together by a thin plot. The fighting was good, but not the best I've seen. Pay close attention to the scene where the prince visits a temple during a funeral ceremony, and you will see a couple of black-and-white PHOTOGRAPHS of the deceased people displayed prominently on the altar - perhaps there were time travelers involved in the plot but I didn't catch it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Old "Skool Kun Fu!! Comment: I expected big things from this flick,,,but i felt it fell really short. Nontheless this i though it was entertaining. The drunken fights were amazing, and the old school kung fu really plentyful and consistant thoughout the flick!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Shaolin Temple Against Lama Comment: THERE ARE FEW MARTIAL ARTS MOVIES THAT ARE OUT THERE WITH NON STOP ACTION. THIS IS ONE OF THEM. FROM THE OPENING CREDITS ALEXANDER LO REI IS ATTACKED BY A PAID ASSASSIN AND FROM THERE ON ITS JUST ACTION. ONE OF THE MOST UNDERATED MARTIAL ARTS FILM OUT THERE. IF YOU BUY YOU WILL ENJOY.
