Editorial Reviews:

Talk about hubris: this film, released at the height of sequelmania in the mid-1980s, came with its own intimations of future sequels built right into the title. Unfortunately, you have to make a good first film in order to generate follow-ups--something these filmmakers didn't manage--so the adventure began and ended with this one. Based on the pulp paperback adventure series The Destroyer, the film deals with a ne'er-do-well, Remo Williams (Fred Ward), who is recruited to battle the forces of evil. He is trained by an Asian martial arts master who, in those days before political correctness, was played by Joel Grey in heavy makeup. But the action is both forced and preposterous, jokey without every really being funny. The best thing about the film is Grey--and his stereotyped depiction of an Asian is pretty hard to take today. --Marshall Fine

Customer Rating: Summary: This movie would have made Fred Ward a household name Comment: Good plot line, good acting, lots of energy, here's a movie that's custom made for sequels. What happened? No Hollywood hype machine. Would have made Fred's career. Love Joel Grey, but not as an Asian character, this was before Hollywood realized that Asian's can play Asian characters. Not as awful as Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's though. That was the worst I've ever seen. I remember when I saw Breakfast at Tiffany's I didn't know he was supposed to be Asian, I just thought he was "special".And Mickey is a good actor, but that performance was just embarrassing for him and the audience. Too bad about this movie though, it would have been a fine jumping off point for Fred's career.
Customer Rating: Summary: Love Remo but this movies falls short. Comment: The Destroyer was NOT given a fair shake in this outing. Though it was a good try, it falls short. You can tell there were many involved who did not have a clue about Remo, Chuin, or the Glorious House of Sinanju. I wish they could have done better by them. Though Fred Ward is PERFECT cast as Remo!
Customer Rating: Summary: Action adventure fun movie Comment: This is the only movie from the destroyer book series. A gumg ho go america film thats fun for all
Customer Rating: Summary: Great cheasy action film meant to have sequels, but never achieved its potential Comment: This is one of the first movies I remember seeing in the theater as a kid, the other ones that stick out are Return of the Jedi and Star trek III: the search for Spock. That summer, all I wanted to do was walk on water like the little Korean Man. Looking at the film today, wow, the effects are rough. Camea angles are not the greatest, zip lines are seen, and good greif the Computers and "secret Camera", what a joke. But hey, the story is still pretty cool. Where else do you see a man dodge bullets. This was also based on a series of books, "the destroyer"series I believe, so I think it was an attempt to try and start another James bond like series of films from a book series. Unfortunately, it never caught on, so this film series died as quietly as it was received. One final note, Katheryn Magrew, Captain Janeway in Star Trek Voyager, was the female star of this film, of course it was one of her first bigger roles. Obviously, this film never made her a big star either, so ten years later Voyager was her break. Wilford Brimely was also in this flick as the man behind the scenes, the information running the big computer. Interesting choice. Anyhow. Read some of the other reviews, but I think its still a good film despite some flaws. I agree, a sequel or remake currently could make it a big series.
Customer Rating: Summary: "You always talk like a Chinese fortune cookie?" Comment: I love this film. It's a great 80's cheesy action romp. It's also a decent adaption of the Destroyer novels. I think the time is right to remake this film (that seems to be the bandwagon these days). After all, it really isn't a remake as it is a re-imagining of the novels. With todays awesome special effects it could really be something great. They probably should make it a little more politically correct, though. At any rate, this is a solid movie and definetely a good time.
