Summary: Ti Lung is Great!
Comment: I am a woman who avidly collects old school kung fu films. I know a bad film when I see one, and this isn't one! But it isn't for anyone who is only looking for rampant and pointless gore and/or impossible feats of martial arts prowes! Heroes tells an intriquing story. This does not mean that fight scenes and choreography are lacking, however. The final scene in particular, is always a tragic joy for me. I cannot not say more about it without giving too much of the plot away. Ti lung, a real Wing Chun practioner, shines in Heroes. Wai Man Chan and Dorian Tan, also real life martial artist, are wonderful in this as well. The quality of the film is not the greatest; but face it, it is not a Shaw Bros. production, so it has not been remastered. The picture quality is not so poor so as not to be able to enjoy it, but just rustic enough to give you that old school nostalgic feeling. Lung brings his usual majestic aura to the screen and Chan is always a formidable enemy who I enjoy watching paired against Lung (check Deadly Breaking Sword). Lung plays a high ranking official who has betrayed and imprisoned his kung fu brothers of the Shoalin Temple and tries to convince them to do as he has done, join forces with the enemy. He tortures them brutally. Just as he did in Blood Brothers, Lung is able to aptly demonstrate the psychological tormoil of a leader who is challenged not to let his emotional conflicts deter him from his greater political aims. He does this, risking reputation, legacy, and life. Flashback is used throughout the movie to show Lung and Tan as students of the Shaolin Temple being taught lessons about morality and sacrafice. These flashbacks help to emphasize Tan's character's confusion and devastation by his brother's betrayal. He and his comrades continued futile resistance is quite admirable and give cause for support. Many people who give this movie a bad review miss the point. Beyond a martial arts classic, it is a tragedy ala Hero starring Jet Li (no connection between the two movies). Ultimately, this movie is about sacrafice of individual reputation, comrades, family, and life for one's country. It leaves you wondering if, unlike some of the reviewers here, the rebels got the point. A great movie for any true kungfu movie fan. A must have for any Ti Lung, Wai Man Chan, and/or Dorian Chan fan. If anyone knows how I can get this in the original language, please post.

Summary: This review is for the Tai Seng DVD of 'The Heroes' from 1980
Comment: Ti Lung plays a traitor of the Shaolin temple. He is a General working for the Chings. Dorian Tan, Choi Wang and Wu Ma play students of Shaolin, and are captured after the temple is destroyed. They are repeatedly tortured by Ti Lung. Chan Wai Man plays the high government official, and he suspects something is up. Ti Lung is not only torturing his former friends, but he is actually training them to become stronger so they can overthrow the Ching dynasty. As you can probably guess, the movie ends with a duel between Chan Wai Man and Ti Lung.
I was not blown away by this movie, but that is probably because I have seen so many kung fu movies and this just didn't offer anything new to me. And it doesn't help that it is a very low budget movie. I did get a surprise at the end, so it gets bonus points for that. And I have to point out how great of an actor Ti Lung is. It doesn't matter how cheap the movie is, Ti Lung is always the man.
The fighting is a bit slow, but the choreography by Robert Tai is still pretty good. Ti Lung is smooth as can be with his movements, Dorian Tan's kicks look great, and the final fight is definitely worth waiting for.

Picture quality is decent. Looks the same as all of Tai Seng's other Martial Arts Theater releases. The English dub sounds fine. There is a commentary from Ric Meyers. He basically just reads off filmographies.

Comment: Oh man, where do I start?
The quality is the absolute worst I've ever seen... even for a Kung Fu flick. Scenes are abruptly cut, it's WAY too blurry, the audio quality is horrible... I couldn't even make out a basic plot because everytime people would talk, the scene would cut to some horrid fight scene. And believe me, the fight scenes are HORRIBLE.
This movie is the ultimate Kung Fu laugh-fest, though. If you like to chill and dub your own Kung Fu flicks, GET THIS ONE. If you want to see a good Kung Fu flick, PASS on this one. Don't say you weren't warned...

Summary: classic martial arts flick, dreadful quality
Comment: A wonderful HK classic with plenty of well choreographed fights, and even a meningful plot (well, by HK standards). The story follows a former Shaolin student, turned Ching -- Marshall Kao, who is forced to eradicate the very temple that once harbored him, and thus to betray his own btothers, who are initilally incredulous of Kao's new allegiance. Torn between his loyalty and his friends who have all but turned against him, Kao forges a plan to redeem himself and pays the ultimate price upon its completion.
The reason for a 3 star rating is the horrendous image quality on this DVD. I do not recall the VHS being this bad, it simply looks out of focus most of the time -- a real f%^*ing disgrace. Definitely recommend the movie, but do bring your prescription glasses as not to be completely baffled by the impressionistic DVD transfer.

Summary: one of the best kung-fu flicks ever!!!!!
Comment: this has some of the most amazing fight scenes ever, especially the last one in the prison area. the story is basic, about the shaolin temple being stopped by an emperor, in which one of the students from the temple is working for. he helps captures the students who are still alive and tortures them in the prisons for a reason (which i won't give away). definetally one of the best!!!
