Who is this mysterious buxom beauty? She's an office worker, a motorcycle racer, a street musician, a police officer, and most of all, a warrior of love. Summary: Rice Balls and Honey
Comment: Although the director Anno Hideaki is best known for the work he has done for the animated series Neon Genesis Evangelion, and before that Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, he has also directed a few live action films including the Murakami Ryu short story based Love and Pop (1998) and Ritual (2000), which was written by and stars Steven Seagal's daughter Fujitani Ayako. Both of these films, although they both have their rough spots, are well done and they display Anno's keen camerawork and his use of angles that are rarely seen in other directors' films. Therefore, when I heard that Anno was directing a live action film based on Nagai Go's manga/anime series Cutie Honey, I was not so much pleased as disappointed because I thought the director was backtracking instead of moving forward with his fascinating, experimental film style.
Cutie Honey follows the life of Kisaragi Honey, a young woman whose naïve, childlike personality and high energy makes her more annoying than attractive to those around her, albeit her figure, ample chest, and penchant for running around in little more than her bra and panties does draw a bit of attention. Earning a living as an office girl, Honey also is a super heroine able to morph her appearance into whatever she desires with choices such as a nurse or a police woman being her favorites. One day, Cutie Honey encounters a nefarious group of villains called Panther Claw led by a bizarre being called Golden Claw who has kidnapped her beloved uncle, Professor Utsugi, who had aided her father in giving Cutie Honey her powers. After an amazing fight, Cutey Honey defeats Golden Claw, but, unfortunately, her uncle is still kidnapped. However, Honey meets two friends who will aid her in her search for her uncle, the ultra-serious NSA agent Aki Natsuko and the cool reporter Hayami Seiji. Will Cutie Honey be able to save her uncle from the baddies, and will she be able to eat enough rice balls so she does not have to run outside in her undies?
Cutie Honey is nothing more than an animated action film performed by human beings, meaning that its action is ludicrous and that its storyline is puerile and vapid. However, for what it lacks in content, it attempts to make up in fun, and that is what Cutie Honey is, an empty, fun-filled film that can probably be only tolerated once. Also, although the cartoon version of Cutey Honey features quite a bit of nudity and Cutey Honey's actress is a famed bikini model with admirable "assets" there is no nudity in the film, so this filmic version of Cutie Honey can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Summary: Fan of Cutie Honey
Comment: I've watched the anime version of the Cutie Honey series and was curious how it would transfer to live action. I have found it doesn't always translate well. However, it did pretty good for me. I was laughing big time during movie and seeing some of the things I was expecting to find. The exaggerated costumes is what I would expect and was not disappointed. I eagerly await the next movie with Eriko Sato.

Comment: I'm not usually a fan of this sort of over-the-top action, but I really enjoyed this film. I'm a big fan of Ichikawa Mikako and I was rather suprised to see her in this type of film.
The flow of the movie was great, there were no lulls and the characters were engaging and easy to connect with.
This film is fun from start to finish, and it's worth watching again and again. I highly recommend this film if you like loads of colour splashed everywhere, catchy music, and likeable characters.

Comment: Cutey Honey-The live action movie is similar to most live action versions of manga or anime characters. They usually fall short of the original. It was decent and had high production values, but the humor doesn't always translate well to american audiences. The action is similar to the stuff you would see in the Adam West Batman Television series or movie. I would only suggest you pick this up, if you're a fanboy like myself.

Summary: Honey Flash!
Comment: First off, I loved this live action movie based on Cutie Honey, a character from manga and anime, who can change into anything or anybody to help her fight crime. As long as she has the energy to do so - so we see her eating a lot of rice balls. Second, I am sure they changed the Cutie Honey opening lyrics, but that's OK, because they wanted to make sure it was for ages 13 and up. Third, Eriko Sato is a great Cutie Honey. Always happy, shapely and willing to wear that weird, if sexy, outfit. Fourth, Carrie Keranen is the English voice actress for Cutie Honey and does a great job at matching the Japanese Idol's energy and expressions.
The story is simple. Cutie Honey must save the world from the evil organization called the Panther Claw. They are EVIL, because they have kidnapped girls, stolen gold and been pretty mean towards everybody. There is a lot of fighting styled after anime and manga scenes, lots of outfits for Cutie Honey and lots of humor. Even better is the Making of Cutie Honey feature that is one of the best extras I have seen on a DVD. The whole movie is 93 minutes long, is fast and rarely bores you. GET IT!
