Customer Rating: Summary: Not what I expected but had to give it a try Comment: Whenever I get a new teaching DVD I usually watch it twice - the first time just to see the setting, the moves, the speed, etc. The second time I follow along.
When I got this DVD, I put it in the player and started to watch it. Well, i found it incredibly boring. The instructor does not move from his place, the scenery is ... well... very ordinary, etc. I was almost tempted to put the DVD on the "never to watch again" shelf when I realized that the reason for the DVD is not to entertain me.
So, I played it again and followed the instructions. I honestly enjoyed the lack of frills and distractions. This allowed me to concentrate more on the directions given. In the end, I had a phenomenal workout.
Another favorable trait of the DVD is that it allows you to choose the kind of workout you want, and most especially the time you want to dedicate to it. Sometimes I have the full time slot, but at times (or, most of the time) I have less than that. It's great that I can "customize" the workout with my remote control.
The DVD will remain on my workout shelf and I have already notified my friends about this one. Hope you will enjoy it too.
Customer Rating: Summary: Top Notch Comment: Wow....I'll have to admit I wasn't expecting much from this. I'm a nut for DVDs that teach... but you usually need a lot of patience and great skill with your remote in order to really learn anything. Well NOT here! This DVD is just GREAT! You can go through a course where postures are repeated...you can just practice upper body movements or just proper stances. Anyone can learn from this. I couldn't find any feature that needed improvement....AND content...AGAIN.. WOW...I sometimes have trouble sleeping and thought I would try going through some routines before bed and it worked like a charm. I don't think I've been that relaxed in years. This DvD has become a prized possession. Thank you YMAA.
Customer Rating: Summary: A Non-Tai Chi Practitioners View Of This Remarkably Well Done DVD Comment: Before I start the review of this DVD, I should probably qualify my review with a little background information on myself and my expertise in the martial arts, and perhaps more importantly my lack thereof when it comes to Tai Chi. I currently hold high black belt ranks in the martial arts of Karate and Tae Kwon Do and have ranking in Judo, Hapkido, and Aikido as well. So my background is primarily in the hard-style of martial arts compared to the softer styles.
However, as any well informed martial artist knows, a lot of the principles are the same regardless of the particular martial art practiced. Therefore, this is how my review of this DVD will be based, not on any sense of expertise in the art of Tai Chi, but more so on the underlying principles and the benefits that I can obtain from watching and then adapting the principles and techniques in this DVD to suit my own personal needs.
I have to wholeheartedly agree that the instructor is right on the money when he says that executing these exercises will relax you both mentally and physically. I can personally attest to that as the very first time I sat down to watch this I started going through some of the exercises as they were being demonstrated and ended up falling asleep about 20 minutes into it. It really did work! Anyhow, the next day I was able to finish reviewing it without any further narcoleptic episodes.
To begin with, I found the instructor's physical demonstration and the accompanying narrative to be very well done and I especially liked all of the technical information and the accompanying examples to explain the various aspects of Tai Chi. A lot of what is taught is, or really should be, standard information that one should know, but more than likely does not. Simple principles are the cornerstone for truly learning in depth all that a particular martial art, in this case Tai Chi, has to offer.
The one small thing that I felt was missing which would have added immensely to the value of this DVD would have been if the instructor would have demonstrated the techniques bare-armed and bare-chested in order to more accurately show the physical movements that he was actually doing. The Tai Chi jacket top really impeded your view of the exact body movement that was being executed, even though it was being verbally explained at the same time as the physical demonstration.
The first section includes a quite a few various exercises that work in conjunction with proper breathing and visualization in order to help you cool down and de-stress yourself after a long day. As I was watching this, it occurred to me that a lot of these exercises could also be used for a warm-up exercise prior to beginning more strenuous activities. One exercise in particular stuck out in my mind which was one where your body was to imitate the motions of a wave.
Another section that really stood out for me was the options of performing 20, 30, or 60 minute workout routines while standing, or you could also choose the option of doing them while sitting. Another feature included with this section was the ability to change the music. I thought that was really a unique feature and one that would be beneficial especially if you were performing these exercises along with the DVD on a regular basis.
I do not know the instructor personally, but if he is anything like he presents himself in this DVD, then he is definitely top-notch and knowledgeable about his chosen subject, which in this case is Tai Chi.
Here are a couple of other Tai Chi DVD's and books that I would also recommend.
Sunrise Tai Chi (YMAA) DVD
Tai Chi Energy Patterns (YMAA) 2-DVD set
Tai Chi Dynamics: Principles of Natural Movement, Health & Self-Development
Tai Chi Walking: A Low-Impact Path to Better Health
I am going to be using this DVD every work day for the next couple of weeks to really try and get a feel for Tai Chi. If this DVD and the material presented on it impress someone as uninformed on the subject as I am, I can just imagine how beneficial it will be to someone who actually practices Tai Chi.

Customer Rating: Summary: Gentle, Easy, Authentic Comment: This is a well constructed workout. The warmup section is actually a long, fully-realized qigong session. Done slowly and with presence it is very calming yet stimulating to the entire body. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of techniques shown, each one could stand on its own as a quick refresher during the day.
The actual tai chi section has an authenticity that sets this DVD apart from many on the market. It would serve as an excellent entry point for learning a longer traditional form, as the movements are not a watered-down westernized version. Even on its own, it will work wonders for those short on time and/or patience, or those whose current health or age make learning a longer form prohibitive. I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in learning what Tai Chi and qigong are about. The benefits are tangible and worth your time.
Customer Rating: Summary: relax and enjoy Comment: I have taken ballet and yoga classes, but this is my first experiance with Tai Chi. I started out with the sitting 20 minute routine. The music was soothing, and so was the narrators voice. The drills were repeated enough times that I could copy the broad outlines of each movement. The wide sleeves of the instructor made it difficult to see the wrist and elbow angles. A side view and bare arms would have made this easier. After the drills a short routine was shown. Thanks to the drills, I was able to follow without too much confusion. I was surprised to find that I was breathing more heavily and that I could feel a slight ache in my shoulders afterward. It was more of a workout than I expected. I felt calm, but not sleepy afterwards. I enjoyed it enough that I believe I wil continue to use this video, if not every day, at least as a changeup from my yoga dvd's. I am also very happy that this DVD makes use of the capabilities of DVDs by offering several workouts, not just one as if copied from a vhs tape.
