"Being able to sustain the thrill of the fight across so many volumes isn't an easy thing and a lot of series break under their own weight from it but Baki has the edge in brutality to it that sets it apart." --- AnimeonDVD.com

Summary: Make sure you know what you're buying/thinking about buying
Comment: Hegemonic masculinity and violence definitely runs rampant in this series; that being said, this anime is obviously not for young viewers. The main character's mother is a bit on the nut-so side, the father isn't too far behind, and the person on the front of the box there is supposed to be 13-years-old. Judging from all of those things it should be pretty obvious that this is not a brain food anime. It's, more or less, fighting, fighting, and more fighting. When I bought this series I went in expecting as much and therefore was not disappointed. I was actually very pleased with this purchase.

The best advice that I can give you is that if you don't mind watching something that's like a UFC/Mortal Combat hybrid saturated in extremely heavy `WTF' overtones (for lack of a better example), then this is the anime for you. If you're looking for something that you can seriously watch and evaluate for "deeper meanings" and that has a "grade 'A' plot", then don't even bother. It's a fighting anime; nothing more, nothing less. So don't go in expecting to see much more than that or you'll have otherwise wasted both your time and your money.

Summary: As Generic as it gets.
Comment: This is an Anime that I have heard people rave about. I honestly did not like it. The premise is that a fighting tournament is taking place to determine the best fighter in the world. Each fight is extremely boring and all of the fighters are generic and uninteresting. There is little or no character development, period. The animation is inconsistent (several characters look completely different during different episodes.) The show ends in a letdown fight between Baki and His Brother (who he doesn't know is his brother until near the time of the fight.) This is an anime that I would avoid personally, but some individuals may like it. If you are into tournament style anime, then I would suggest looking elsewhere. Dragonball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, and others are all better at showing tournament fighting than this show.

Summary: An excellent pure martial arts anime series
Comment: This is the beginning and conclusion to the Tournament saga. Baki the Grappler is a pure bred martial arts anime. Free from the multiple level power ups, exaggerated air battles, and energy attacks from the hands. Now there is some exaggeration but it doesn't take away from what I feel is the best martial arts anime I seen.

This chapter begins with Baki defending his title in a no holds barred, weapon less fight fest. Baki has evolved into an excellent fighter. He still seeks to surpass and defeat his father Yujiro in battle. However, he has to compete against several fighters with various fighting styles and a killer instinct that rivals his fathers. During this free for all many fighters are introduced and most of their backgrounds are uncovered. They all have goals ranging from being the best to upholding the honored names of their dojos and styles.

The fights are brutal. But what I find the best about this series, is that it's impossible to predict who is going to win. It was hard for me to pick a favorite.

It's pretty fast paced for the most part and it does drag a little bit at times. The major concerns with this is the battles in which many doesn't disappoint. This is pretty much your basic mindless fighting anime and it delivers greatly on that end. There is no deeper meaning concerning this at all. The only faults I saw in this is that the animation can be pretty crappy at times and the soundtrack although pretty good and fits with the moments. There is no real variety and it can seem pretty dull after hearing it for the 25th time.

Baki the Grappler in my opinion is a much needed breath of fresh air for those sick and tired of the DBZ type of battles. I found myself caring about a few of the characters. The ending can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. I have my reason why it works out well to me. It can use another chapter but I have no knowledge of one. It leaves you wanting more. Sometimes I think the wrong titles get pushed.

If what you're looking for is a good straight up beat near to death martial arts anime. I feel it can satisfy alot of anime fans. Those who live and die by thought driven titles should seek a rental or just avoid it altogether.
